Sermon Follow-up for Sunday, June 7th, 2026

Dear Saints,

Here is a summary of the application from yesterday’s sermon for your consideration.

Pastor Bordwine

* Adonijah’s actions remind us that sinful people often pursue their goals indirectly rather than openly. Instead of approaching Solomon himself, he attempted to use Bathsheba’s influence on her son to gain an advantage. Scripture repeatedly warns us about such subtle and deceptive methods.

* Christians must be careful not to participate in the spread of suspicion, criticism, or discord. One of the simplest and most effective ways to resist this kind of behavior is to refuse to listen when someone speaks negatively of a brother or sister. Remember that God hates those who sow strife among His people (Prov. 6:16–19).

* The passage also teaches the importance of exercising wisdom in matters of trust. Bathsheba had reason for concern when Adonijah approached her, yet she set aside her suspicions too quickly. While Christians are called to be forgiving, forgiveness does not require ignoring a pattern of untrustworthy behavior. The wise Christian learns from the past.

* Adonijah’s experience illustrates the futility of resisting God’s revealed will. Though he repeatedly sought to advance himself and secure what God had not given him, every scheme brought him closer to destruction. His story demonstrates that no amount of cleverness, ambition, or determination can overturn the purposes of God.

* Scripture’s warnings are not theoretical. Adonijah’s life shows the turmoil, danger, and eventual ruin that accompany persistent rebellion. Those who believe themselves wiser than God inevitably discover that His warnings are true and His purposes cannot be successfully opposed.

* The gospel calls us to a very different path. Rather than exalting ourselves, we are called to submit ourselves to God’s chosen King, Jesus Christ. Where Adonijah sought a throne that was not his, Christ humbled Himself to save us and now reigns over an everlasting kingdom. True wisdom is found not in pursuing our own will, but in trusting and obeying the One whom God has established as Lord over all.
