Midweek Devotional for August 19, 2026: Proverbs 8:4

Proverbs 8:4 “To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men. 5 O naive ones, understand prudence; and, O fools, understand wisdom. 6 Listen, for I will speak noble things; and the opening of my lips will reveal right things.”

Proverbs 8 introduces us again to Wisdom personified as a woman calling out to those who will listen. This is especially striking after chapter 7. There the adulterous woman calls to the inexperienced young man and uses persuasive words to draw him toward sin. Now another woman speaks—Wisdom—and her words lead in precisely the opposite direction.

Proverbs therefore presents two competing voices. Folly calls us away from God while Wisdom calls us toward Him. The question is not whether we will listen to a voice, but which voice we will choose to hear.

Notice the breadth of Wisdom’s invitation. (v. 4) She does not reserve her instruction for scholars, rulers, or those who are already wise. Wisdom calls to all generally. God’s wisdom is not hidden away so that only an intellectual elite can discover it. God has revealed truth and calls people to hear it.

This is one of the great blessings of Biblical revelation. Left to ourselves, we would have no reliable way of discovering truth concerning God, ourselves, righteousness, salvation, and the purpose of life. But God has spoken. Wisdom raises her voice and invites us to listen.

The “naive” person in Proverbs is inexperienced and easily influenced. He has not necessarily committed himself completely to wickedness, but he lacks discernment and therefore can easily be led in the wrong direction. We met precisely such a person in the previous chapter. But notice the encouraging difference. The naive do not have to remain naive. Wisdom calls them to “understand prudence.” (v. 5)

Even the fool is summoned to become wise. The person who has made reckless decisions in the past is not therefore condemned to continue making them. There is much grace in Wisdom’s invitation: God speaks truth to us precisely because we need it.

Verse 6 begins with the essential command: “Listen, for I will speak noble things; and the opening of my lips will reveal right things.” Wisdom must be heard. It is not enough that God’s truth exists or that we possess a Bible. Wisdom benefits us when we listen to God’s revelation, believe it, and order our lives accordingly.

Solomon describes Wisdom’s words as “noble things” and “right things.” Words from God are trustworthy because they reflect God’s own character. His Word does not deceive us, manipulate us, or entice us toward destruction. That creates another contrast with chapter 7. The adulterous woman spoke attractive words, but they concealed death. Wisdom speaks right words that lead to life.

A prayer for your meditation:

“Grant, Almighty God, that as thou hast been pleased to draw us by thy Word to thyself, we may not be deaf to thy voice, nor harden our hearts against thee.” John Calvin
