Elijah’s Retreat: 1 Kings 1
Summary
Elijah had just witnessed the extraordinary triumph of the LORD on Mount Carmel, yet when Jezebel threatened his life, the prophet became afraid and fled. Exhausted and discouraged, he traveled into the wilderness, sat beneath a juniper tree, and asked the LORD to take his life. Yet God did not abandon His frightened servant. He provided Elijah with rest, food, water, and strength for the journey to Horeb.
At Horeb the LORD demonstrated that His sovereign purposes were not dependent upon Elijah’s understanding of events. A powerful wind tore through the mountains, followed by an earthquake and fire, but the LORD was not in these manifestations. Then came the sound of a gentle blowing. God remained perfectly calm, confident, and in control while Elijah was agitated and discouraged. The LORD announced the coming judgment through Hazael and Jehu and instructed Elijah to call Elisha as his successor.
Elijah also learned that his assessment of Israel was badly mistaken: God had preserved seven thousand who had never bowed to Baal. God’s work was far greater than Elijah could see, and His purposes had never been endangered by Ahab, Jezebel, or Israel’s rebellion.
The same sovereign God continues to govern history and every circumstance of the lives of His people. We therefore must not interpret difficult circumstances as evidence that God no longer has control, nor should we decide from our own exhaustion that we have reached the end of what God intends for us. We must also resist drawing conclusions about God’s work merely from what is presently visible to us.
God’s ultimate purpose has been revealed in Jesus Christ, who came to rescue His people, conquered His enemies, and now exercises unparalleled authority. Christ’s certain victory gives His people reason for confidence rather than despair. We may not presently understand everything God is doing, but we know the victorious Christ reigns, and therefore we can trust Him, persevere, and live hopefully under His sovereign rule.
