Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
In the first five verses of this chapter, Solomon extols the value of wisdom. He exhorts his son to seek wisdom with diligence. He compares wisdom to that which is considered precious in this life.
The exhortation given by Solomon to his son (and the readers of this book), therefore, is this: receive God’s word eagerly, treasure God’s commandments, inclineyour ear to wisdom, cry out for discernment, and seek understanding with all diligence.
Then comes verse 6 in which Solomon reveals that the search for wisdom which he is encouraging is not merely intellectual. True wisdom ultimately comes from the Lord Himself. Wisdom is not simply human cleverness, education, experience, or common sense. It is a gift of God, and it comes through what He has spoken.
The phrase “from His mouth” points to God’s revealed Word. The wisdom that is needed and that is in fact critical for life is only found in what God has declared. If you desire wisdom as defined by Solomon, you must be a student of Scripture.
The advice given to young Timothy by the apostle Paul is relevant as we consider Solomon’s exhortation ourselves: “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15)
Since, as Solomon teaches, wisdom comes from God Himself, the servant of God must handle that Word carefully and faithfully. The study of the Word will always be a characteristic of the truly wise people we encounter in this life.
There is another aspect of Solomon’s teaching that must be considered. Solomon teaches us that wisdom comes from the mouth of God and is therefore found in the Word God has spoken. The Scriptures are not merely religious ideas or human reflections about life; they are the revealed wisdom of God.
As the Bible unfolds, however, we learn that God’s wisdom is not only written on the page, it is embodied in a Person. The same God who speaks wisdom through His Word has given us His final and fullest revelation in Jesus Christ (Heb. 1:1, 2), the eternal Word made flesh, in whom, as Paul declares, are hidden “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Col. 2:3)
To receive the written Word rightly, we must come to the living Word. Scripture does not merely point us to principles designed to improve our lives; it leads us to Christ Himself, the eternal Son of God, who is wisdom incarnate. Therefore, the goal of Biblical wisdom is not simply that we become better informed, but that we know, trust, love, and follow the One in whom all the riches of wisdom and knowledge are found.
In the verses following our text, Solomon explains what God gives to those who seek His wisdom. God serves as a storehouse of wisdom for His people. He is a shield to those who walk according to his Word and He guards their way. (cf. vv. 7–9)
Proverbs 2:6 reminds us that wisdom begins not with self-confidence, but with dependence upon God. We seek wisdom diligently, but we receive it humbly, knowing that the Lord is its source.
